This is full day Oh Of course, you probably don't hear this a lot, but I actually really enjoy a parent-teacher conference You know first of all, I like to know how Billy is doing and second of all, you know I want to know how I can help him improve. That is something I do not hear every day and You know being a parent like you is really what helps the students reach their full potential. It is so great to hear I don't know. I just I don't think it's really fair to keep it all on the shoulders of the teacher You've already got your hands full teaching and senior class. You've got all these rambunctious 18-year-olds Yeah, but I can assure you that your Billy is one of the good ones And speaking of I do have Tina coming in soon. She's 18 like the rest of the class And she's already so advanced. She was actually top of the class this month So she's coming in to get her reward. Oh, yeah I remember that you have some unusual but very effective reward systems. But yeah, no, I don't mind at all Oh, here she is. I'm Tina. I don't mind me Not at all. It's nice to meet you Tina and congratulations on being top of your class. Thank you so much So now to Billy's reading comprehension It's actually quite fantastic. Oh, yeah, I've always tried to encourage him to be like a lifelong reader Yeah, I can see that the the reading at home is really paid off. You're doing a really fantastic job with him Well, I can't take all the credit This is you always choose really interesting books to read in class. Oh, thank you. That is so good to hear The classics are great, but I like to pick a few modern titles to spice things up a little bit After all, we are competing with video games on the internet these days I completely want the students to be tech literate, but I also want them to appreciate little fashion books Exactly It's so important for development for them to read more than just social media posts And speaking of development, Billy is doing great, but I think there is room for growth Oh, yeah, so while he shows considerable enthusiasm for reading, he shows significantly less for the literary analysis Yeah, so it's like when we get to things like metaphors and symbolism or when I talk about an unreliable narrator it's Like he's not quite getting it I I understand. Um, I feel like for most teens that's probably the least exciting part of English is His literary analysis It is, but I think if you really focused he could really excel Yeah, no, I know that when I was his age, I Didn't really appreciate literary analysis as much at first But then when I get older, I really understood how it was like helping music work fairly and make better decisions and I do appreciate it now Yeah, exactly. Especially with as much misinformation that is out there these days And moving on to creative writing Billy is quite imaginative Dungeons dragons fantasy houses castles He really has the potential to be a fantastic fantasy novelist someday Thank you. Yeah, he's always been great Yeah, and I actually have one of his writing assignments here If you would like to take a look at it. Um, of course, he got an A plus sign Here we just got his bow I'd have to read it too If we look at the second paragraph when you get there just it's fantastic Oh, okay. Thank you Yeah I was around when he was writing this like I didn't like Stay and help him do it or anything, but I remember watching him. We seemed excited. Yeah He you can tell that he really enjoyed writing this one. He did. Yeah, I'm glad that you're still covering things like creative writing and everything He's not just essay essay It really it's where he shines Oh Yes Isn't that just Is that is he established is that theme or I think it's yeah, it's the theme Like that's really what like he goes through for the rest of the entire paper And do you see what he did here? He like carried it in from that first page Yeah, I think that the swamp which might be uh Might be based on the x That makes a lot of sense. Yeah That x really did a number on him, didn't she? You know, there there you go You figure this character Because this character really stood out to me. I just think the storyline starts crafting Yeah, I think he's kind of like I mean, I don't know what you're telling me, but it does seem like he's kind of like broken This girl that he really liked into two parts He got princess and swamp which It's cute It's so interesting reading this and as his mother and moving for little clues about Who's this and who's that He really does pull from his life, doesn't it? I mean, maybe I'm seeing what I want to see. Maybe I'm looking so much into it. I don't think so So is Billy signing up for any extra curriculars? So I like him to be as well around as possible. So he's You know, he's doing guitar and he's doing um Soccer, but Just just the two I guess guitar is like academic. Yeah, you know, I mean music is I couldn't Yeah, I had him pick two And then we just gonna walked in I do try to give him to read a lot though. Like I really do. Um, you know, I'm really happy to see that the The fantasy authors that I had given him Are kicking in there that he's enjoying those Um, would you suggest having him focus more on fantasy authors or more so branching out more? I mean maxing are we are we well rounded? Branching out is never a bad idea But like the more fantasy he reads the more he's gonna really like develop that skill And so I don't think it's a bad thing for him to just have that new focus point I mean, it's what he loves, you know, yeah, you can really tell This is so incredible Like I said, I can make him read tart and car heat stuff like that, but then he gets really excited about your first book in Lewis That sort of thing Yeah, I mean other people are gonna make him read it So like if he just wants to do what he actually enjoys, that's the important part Didn't need that So excited for what he's gonna do for the fourth essay That one I think I'm gonna push him to like really think outside of what he's usually writing Just to see how much we can expand his Yeah, let's try try something new. Yeah, exactly I remember him talking to me about this like, you know, like different Pieces of jewelry representing different things Yeah, and I mean, I didn't know what he was talking about at the time It's like he gets symbolism here. Yes. Yeah, but when you're trying to get him to see symbol in the other places That's the uh, that's the heart That's true. You can see it bored with it with other people's symbolism He seems to I mean, I think this is very personal So he can do it, you know, if he can do it, I feel like he it's not unreasonable to expect him to see another Right That's actually a good point if we're going out to him like if he wants people to understand his work Doesn't he think that other people want that as well? Writing I feel like if I asked him about this if he was actually writing about his edicts, he would Probably say that he wasn't but it's hard not to think that maybe he is Oh, yeah They're 18. They really just All from all in their life. Everything is just, you know Girlfriend girlfriend girlfriend Sure, if I asked him, he'd be like, of course, not long ago He's like that in class, too Have you read any of his other essays? Is this the first one you're seeing? No, I mean, he obviously he brings them home and he'll show me his grade And he'll sort of talk to me while he's writing them But I've never I've never gotten to read a finished one before, you know It's hard to argue with him. He's like, I got a good grade right just you
